Addictions are mental health disorders characterized by compulsive use and dependence on a substance or activity, despite the negative consequences it may have on a person’s life. Here are some common types of addictions:

  • Substance addiction: This category includes addiction to chemicals such as alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs (such as cocaine, heroin, or methamphetamine), and prescription medications (such as opioids).
  • Gambling addiction (ludopathy): People with gambling addiction have an uncontrollable urge to gamble and bet, which can lead to serious financial problems, family breakdowns, and other negative consequences.
  • Food addiction (binge eating disorder): Recurrent episodes of excessive food intake, often accompanied by a feeling of lack of control.
