Bullying at school and at work are two terms used to describe harmful and repetitive behaviors that occur in different contexts. Bullying involves an imbalance of power, where a person or group of people (the bullies) harass, intimidate or cause harm to a more vulnerable person. Bullying can be verbal, social, physical or online (cyberbullying).
In mobbing, an individual or a group of colleagues systematically and repeatedly harasses, intimidates or defames a co-worker. This can manifest itself through exclusion, humiliation, spreading false rumors, excessive workload, or creating a hostile work environment.
Both bullying and mobbing are unacceptable and can have detrimental effects on the physical and mental health of victims. The effects include anxiety, depression, social isolation, poor academic or work performance, and even suicidal thoughts in some cases.
