Emotional dependency

Emotional dependency

Emotional dependency is a pattern of behavior and relationship dynamic in which a person shows a strong need for attention, approval, and affection from another person, usually their partner or someone close to them, to the point of sacrificing their own identity, well-being and autonomy in the relationship. The emotionally dependent person often feels incomplete or insecure without the presence or constant support of the other person. Some of the common signs and characteristics of emotional dependency include:

  • Fear of loneliness
  • Low self-esteem
  • Sacrifice of personal needs
  • Obsession in a relationship
  • Fear of abandonment and mistrust
  • Difficulty in making decisions (seeking approval, validation or advice from the other person)

Emotional dependency can lead to unbalanced relationships and limit the personal growth and autonomy of the dependent person.
